Whales Spouting

It was a great day.  People had been telling me that there were a lot of whales being seen this year.  It looks like they were correct.  We probably saw about 7 that afternoon.  One came up about 15 feet from the boat.  It would have made a great picture, but everyone was so surprised, they did not have time to get a picture.  Please see our Whale Watching tours.

Yacht Charter - Marketing Tour

Published by Captain Parks under Clients Charters

San Diego Yacht Charter - Marketing Tour

It was just a beautiful evening.  Earlier in the day the fog from the marine layer started rolling in and it was questionable if we would be able to take the cruise.

Luckily, all the fog blew off and it was crystal clear, warm and just a beautiful evening.  We took a cruise up to see the sea lions who live on the bait barge near the submarine dry dock.  As usual there were a couple dozen there sunning themselves and doing what sea lion do.

Do you know the difference between a sea and sea lion?

The captain gave a great talk about their behavior and why they hang out at this location.

A GREAT time was had by all.

Red Bull Air Races ~ May 9, 2009

Published by laurieblog under Clients Charters

Red Bull Air RaceJodi, Logan and a group of friends chartered our 52-foot yacht for an afternoon of watching the Red Bull Air Races, and to celebrate Logan’s birthday. The four-hour charter began an hour earlier than originally planned, so we could get a good viewing spot! We managed to anchor in the middle of the Big Bay between the Navy Base on Coronado and the Embarcadero, so we had a pretty good view. The races were amazing, as the daredevil pilots flew in and out of the pylons - and so close to the water - as if it were a video game. The atmosphere in the bay was like a giant party … it was packed with every type of boat imaginable: luxury yachts, fishing boats, dinghies, kayaks, and of course U.S. Coast Guard and Navy Security boats.

Captain Murf and I had a great time with the group, and decided to take a “mini tour” while the bay cleared out after the races. We cruised over to the USS Midway, then to the Embarcadero to point out all the boats at the MAritme Museum: the Star of India, the HMS Surprise (Russell Crowe’s boat in the movie Master and Commander), the Berkeley, and the Soviet Navy B-39 submarine that was rumored to have at one time tracked the Midway! The Californian (the Stae Official Tall Ship), was out sailing – we passed her on the way back to the dock in America’s Cup Harbor.

The group had a great time, and promised to be back … it was an awesome day!

Pirate Birthday Party ~ Friday, March 20, 2009

Published by laurieblog under Clients Charters

Good friends, awesome music, great food and drink … what more could you want to celebrate your birthday? Oh, maybe to hold the celebration on a luxurious private charter yacht? Well, birthday boy and up-and-coming filmmaker, Sam, did just that. He invited 30+ pals to celebrate with him on the Ocean Spirit … dockside. Everyone enjoyed the unique venue – complete with the easy sway of the boat at dock, the festive lights all around America’s Cup Harbor, and the privacy of being aboard their own private yacht.

Adding even more to the fun, Sam had designated the theme of the party to be - pirates. Kudos to all the mateys and wenches who showed up in proper garb! A good time was had by all, with many promising to come back and do it again.

Whale Watch - February 22

Published by laurieblog under Clients Charters

Although we had to go out quite a ways to find them, we successfully spotted a pod of five whales! It was pretty amazing to see five at one time. The best part was that they were sort of just hanging around playing, basically circling for quite a while.

The whales were almost performing for us as they swam and dove, slapping their tails as if on command. At one point, three whales slapped their tails in near-unison, followed by the other two. It was an amazing sight. Everyone oo-ed, ah-ed and clapped. We eventually left them to head north on their trek back to the Bering Sea.

It is whale watching season in San Diego, so come out with us to view their journey.California Gray Whale

Each year thousands of California Gray Whales make the long trek from their feeding grounds in the nutrient rich arctic waters to caving grounds in Baja, Mexico.  The  migration of approximately 10,000 km is thought to be the longest migration of any mammal.

Two Weddings! Saturday, September 27, 2008

Published by laurieblog under Clients Charters

Gay Weddings in San DiegoToday was a momentous occasion! Two couples – all friends – chartered the yacht for their weddings. As an ordained minister, I had the pleasure of officiating for both ceremonies. We got underway about 5 p.m., with Capt. Murf at the helm. First up were Coleen and Berdi.

Berdi had served as a nurse on the Naval hospital ship USNS Mercy, which had just days before arrived back into port to San Diego Bay, so we had their ceremony with the ship serving as an amazing backdrop! The weather, which had been gray and overcast much of the day, complied by clearing up for the event – almost miraculously.

Capt. Murf then navigated over to the Coronado Bridge – the backdrop for Ginny and Carolyn’s ceremony. It was a beautiful evening, and the ceremonies brought tears (of happiness!) to all. Our captain blasted the yacht’s horn after each ceremony, announcing the marriages – turning tears to laughter.

We then cruised slowly around the Big Bay; the newlyweds enjoyed champagne and hors d’ouevres while passing San Diego’s amazing landmarks, including the USS Midway and the Embarcadero with the Star of India, the HMS Surprise, and the Maritime Museum. It was truly a beautiful night.
