Currently approximately about 40% of the population chooses some type
of scattering, burial at sea is an often selected method. Below are
some notable people which have selected the burial at sea option.
John F. Kennedy jr.
1960 - 1999

John-John, was a journalist, lawyer,
pilot, and socialite. He was the first son of President John
F. Kennedy and Jacqueline Kennedy.
Kennedy was one of the few presidential children
to actually be raised in the White House. He was killed in a
plane crash along with his wife and sister-in-law in mid-1999.
The cremated remains of Kennedy, his wife and sister-in-law
were later scattered from the ship off
the coast of Martha's Vineyard. |

Ingrid Bergman 1915 - 1985

A Swedish three-time Academy Award-winning and two-time Emmy
Award-winning actress.
Bergman died in 1982 on her 67th birthday
in London, England, following a long battle with breast cancer.
Her body was cremated in Sweden. Most of
her ashes were scattered in the sea with the remainder being interred in the Norra begravningsplatsen
in Stockholm next to her parents. A single violin played the song "As
Time Goes By", the theme from Casablanca, recalling her most
famous role. |

Steve Mcqueen
1930 - 1980  |
An American movie actor nicknamed "The King
of Cool."
His "anti-hero" persona, which he developed at the
height of the Vietnam counterculture, made him one of the top
box-office draws of the 1960s and 1970s. He became the highest
paid movie star in the world.
He was an avid racer of both motorcycles and cars. While he
studied acting, he supported himself partly by competing in weekend
motorcycle races and bought his first motorcycle with his winnings. |

Janis Joplin

An American singer, songwriter, and music arranger, from
Port Arthur, Texas. She rose to prominence in the late 1960s as
the lead singer of Big Brother and the Holding Company, and later
as a solo artist. Joplin was cremated in the Pierce Brothers Westwood
Village Mortuary in Los Angeles, and her
ashes scattered from a plane into the Pacific Ocean and along Stinson Beach. The only
funeral service was held at Pierce Brothers and attended by Joplin's
parents and maternal aunt. |
